Ramaphosa cuts Cabinet from 36 to 28, adds more women including De Lille

President Cyril Ramaphosa announced a reconfiguration of government on Wednesday, cutting Cabinet from 36 to 28 ministers… The president has retained David Mabuza as his deputy, and surprised many with the addition of Good Party leader and MP, Patricia de Lille as the new minister of Public Works and Infrastructure.

He has also kept to his promise of increasing the number of women, in line with ANC policy of 50/50 representation in government. “If we are to give effect to this mandate, we need a capable, efficient and ethical government,” Ramaphosa said, announcing that the ruling party had combined several ministries, guided by “the need to build a modern developmental state that has the means to drive economic and social transformation”.

“It is critical that the structure and size of the state is optimally suited to meet the needs of the people and ensure the most efficient allocation of public resources.
